"The Time is Now!" Linear Time Protest

The purpose of this piece was to create an energetic and whimsical antidote to our rigid relationship with time. It seems these days, nearly everyone's life is inextricably intertwined with the ticking of the clock. Busy schedules, deadlines, age related expectations; it can be hard to remember to loosen our grip with linear time now and then, to just be, and simply experience. To break for a moment from our usual marching lockstep towards the ever beckoning future, and hear instead the sound of the wind through leaves, our own heart beating, and so on.

On day two of the Strangers project, I invited a group of friends and fellow artists to join me for a public demonstration to protest the constraints of Linear Time

We began by gathering on the stage at the back of the space to each create a picket signs with slogans to promote our cause.

Once finished, I lead the troops through the Levi's space, and out to the sidewalk in front of the store, where we began our protest.

Beginning first by marching clockwise, we beckoned to passers by to free therm selves from the ticking clock, to stop and smell the flowers (or the lemons, thanks Sue) and to remember above all- The Time Is Now!

As energy and attention grew, we broke from our clockwise march, changing first to a counter clockwise rotation, and ultimately to chaos or quantum flow, everyone marching against each other in whirling, swerving, unpredictable movements.

Finally, we headed back through the Levi's shop, and again took the stage at the back of the room.

I announced to the artists and observers in the shop that in our final act, as a symbol of our rejection of linear time, we would take a hammer to the wall of clocks.

One by one protesters took the stage with hammer in hand, and smashed the face of a clock.
